From his perspective, Toledo Walleye rookie forward Maxime Tanguay doesn't see himself as carrying any extra expectations just because his older brother, Alex, is an accomplished NHL player.

"We've always been compared when we were young," Maxime said. "But my brother is my brother. I'm proud of him. He was my hero."

Trying to fill skates is one thing. Filling a trophy and souvenir case is a completely different matter. When it comes to the latter challenge, Maxime shudders at the task at hand.

The Tanguay family loves collecting mementos from the careers of their hockey playing sons and displaying them in their home in Lac Etchemin, Quebec. Since Alex is nine years older, a veteran of 714 NHL games and counting and a Stanley Cup champ, the collection has been mostly a shrine to his career.

Texas Stars center Travis Morin started this season guaranteed at least one new fan.

He and his wife, Lindsey, welcomed their first child, Andrew, into the world on Aug. 28.

"It's definitely nice to get home and see him when you come through the door," said Travis, 26. "You get a good smile."

Beyond that, Morin was guaranteed very little as a two-year ECHLer trying to land a job in the AHL. A few months later, Morin has a whole dressing room full of people perked up by his presence.

Morin has converted a hope and a prayer that he was ready for a promotion into cold, hard facts that support his cause. A tryout player in Texas to start the season, the AHL rookie now leads the team with 32 points (12-20) and rolled out of a January in which he ripped off 7 goals and 6 assists in 12 games.

"You have to play with a chip on your shoulder, relish being an underdog. It's definitely a role I like. Being a Philly guy, a 'Rocky' story, you can't take a night off. You have to prove everyone wrong every night on the ice." -- Shane Connelly

South Carolina Stingrays rookie goalie Shane Connelly has been seeing how the other half lives the past few weeks, and he enjoys the view from where he sits.

And where he sleeps.

Connelly's appreciative mood was remarkably enhanced after a luxurious overnight bus ride from South Carolina to Cincinnati last week. It was the high life, at least in Connelly's eyes, because all his limbs folded into a nice, comfy compartment instead of splaying out into the aisle. Connelly's previous team, the Johnstown Chiefs, traveled by regular bus during his time there, and that squeeze got a little tight.

"Corey's been a pleasant surprise for us. He's been thrust into a very unique situation. He's shouldered that responsibility and done big things with it." -- Monarchs coach Mark Morris

Manchester Monarchs rookie center Corey Elkins had his marriage proposal all planned out.

He was going to pop the question to his girlfriend over the Christmas break, at his home in Detroit. Then real life interrupted. The Los Angeles Kings called him up over the holidays and all of a sudden Elkins had to go to his backup move.

OK. How about this, his girlfriend could join him in L.A. and he could propose there. Yeah. That'd do it. They went for a nice walk along Manhattan Beach, he asked and she said yes.

Throughout his hockey career, Bakersfield Condor rookie goalie Timo Pielmeier has run into the same question.

"Every coach asks me why I'm smiling," Pielmeier said. "I say, I don't know. I just like my life. Why would I not laugh? If I keep working that hard, I'll have a great future ahead of me."

This season, Pielmeier is putting the whole Condors team in a good mood. The perky Pielmeier, 20, has shrugged off first-year jitters and what looked like a lengthy stay on the bench to ignite Bakersfield to a runaway lead in the Pacific Division. He is tied for the ECHL lead in victories (18), is third in minutes (1,776) and carries a 2.80 goals-against average.

"It's been a great growing year for me. Hopefully it will end in a callup before the year ends. I'm doing everything I can on the ice, putting the ball in (Carolina's) court, making my performance speak for itself. That's all I can do. It is (tough), when you watch the games and you know you have the skill set to play there. But that's the way it is."
-- Jamie McBain

Temptation appeared to Albany River Rats rookie defenseman Jamie McBain in the form of a Big Apple over the AHL all-star break.

McBain used the vacation to visit New York City for the first time. The sights and sounds were a wonder to him, even those he had to ignore.

The smell of street vendor foods swirled into one mass vice, including those from his beloved cheeseburgers and hot dogs. Those are the fast-food embodiments of his weakness, quick fixes he would have inhaled at an earlier point in his career.

But not this time. McBain stuck to more balanced dining at restaurants. Clearing the rookie wall requires strength and energy, and McBain has been a quick study in both playing and eating well.

"When you look back at the numbers at the end of the season, that's when you can be surprised or be proud of your numbers. I'm just taking it a game at a time, that's where I am right now. Just worried about the next game and the next shift, that's what my focus is on."
-- Jeff Skinner

WINDSOR, Ont. -- While much of the attention at the Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game focused on the big three players available for the 2010 Entry Draft, there was room for someone else to steal a bit of the spotlight.

That's just what Jeff Skinner was able to do, taking a bit of the attention from the Taylor Hall-Tyler Seguin-Cam Fowler trio for himself.

After winning the Showdown Breakaway Challenge in Tuesday's skills contest with a few sweet moves, he had a goal and an assist for Team Orr in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Team Cherry.

WINDSOR, Ont. -- There wasn't much time to put in systems, but Team Cherry used a strong penalty kill to score a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-2 win against Team Orr at the Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game at the WFCU Centre.

Ryan Spooner's shorthanded goal at 11:55 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie. Taylor Hall led a 2-on-1 and slid a pass across to Spooner, who beat goalie Louis Domingue.

Jordan Weal had a goal and an assist for Team Cherry. Emerson Etem scored in the second period and Louis-Marc Aubry hit the empty net for the team led by celebrity coach Don Cherry.

Jeff Skinner had a goal and an assist for Team Orr, and Nino Niederreiter also scored for the team led by Hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Orr.

"He was telling me before the game the hardest he ever shot was 98.7.  But back then they were using wooden sticks. … I'm not that far behind hm. It's something for me to aim towards, if I can beat the old man."
-- Brock Beukeboom

Charlotte Checkers forward Andrew Carroll is having trouble grasping this whole notion of professional leverage.

Consider the rookie's assertion that, if given a place to sleep and enough money to buy a few meals, he'd play pro hockey for virtually nothing.

"Oh yeah. I'm just fortunate enough to play hockey," said Carroll, 24. "To be honest, I don't know what else I'd be doing if I wasn't playing hockey. I don't need money. It's not an issue. You get your hockey equipment for free."

Carroll's approach is noble and complements his kid-friendly attitude, but it's also one that he contradicts by showcasing the rising value of his skills nearly every game.
